Product Costing and Simplification with DFMA
The four biggest concerns of product development teams are
function, cost, quality, and time to market. A manager who
fulfills each of these goals is viewed as exceptional by his/her
peers. Join Co-Owner Nick Dewhurst for a discussion of how DFMA
Product Costing and Simplification tools make this task easier
to accomplish. Included will be slides containing real-life
examples of cost savings that maintain balance between function,
quality, and time to market objectives. Mr. Dewhurst will
answer further questions regarding the methodology following the
meeting.

The Next Great Process Improvement: Your Product
Process improvement approaches such as Lean, Six Sigma and Supply
Chain Management have helped companies save millions of dollars.
That’s clear. But would an added focus on the product allow these
process tools to yield even greater savings?

Leveraging Early Cost Data with DFMA
Maximizing the return on your should cost analysis. Once
should cost results are generated the information can be
utilized to:
- Validate costs of parts in current production
- Understand how to focus cost discussions based on early cost
analysis
- Use detailed cost information to move away from discussions
solely on price
- Direct discussions toward critical issues based on actual
scientific analysis
- Work with your suppliers to design-out cost before
production
An early costing process that incorporates DFMA can be an
important part of your new product development process and provide
immediate benefit to your existing cost reduction projects.

All Leaned Out But Where Did We Go?
Lean Manufacturing is a successful production practice focused on eliminating waste and improving
the efficiency of manufacturing and assembly. But the benefits of Lean Manufacturing are limited by
a deeper issue than what can be addressed on the factory floor. This webinar will attempt to explore
this deeper issue and how DFMA is used to eliminate the designed-in wastes and inefficiencies in production.

Are Your Product Designs Costing You
Money?
Nick Dewhurst will demonstrate how DFMA can provide
critical cost and assembly information early in the concept
phase, or at re-design, to guide engineers in determining
the most cost-effective product designs. Nick will
utilize real-world client projects to illustrate the DFMA
concepts. He will then show the use of DFMA software
to baseline and redesign an anonymous everyday item he took
off the shelf. The product for the demonstration will have
mechanical and electrical components and is produced in
large volumes, but our costing and design modules are
applicable to any type or volume of mechanical or electrical
product.
The demonstration will further touch on the who, what and
when for successful integration of this effective tool into
the product lifecycle at any company.

Resurrecting U.S. Manufacturing using Systematic DFMA Deployment
A key bottom-line recession strategy is to deploy Design for
Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) in a systematic way across your
company to achieve competitive success. Mike Shipulski, Director of
Engineering at Hypertherm, in partnership with Boothroyd Dewhurst,
Inc., will demonstrate a methodology for defining the infrastructure,
organization and business processes necessary to deploy DFMA—including
project selection, execution, pacing/mentoring, and metrics. Using
DFMA, Hypertherm was able to increase profits per square foot of
factory floor space 600%, decrease service and warranty expenses 70%
and cut labor 50%. Shipulski sees this kind of proven product design
strategy as a key tool for U.S. manufacturing to regain its leading
role in world markets. Originally presented May 7th 2009.

Using DFMA to Rethink Your China Manufacturing Strategy
The lure of extremely low labor rates entices many companies to
move manufacturing and assembly offshore. These companies seem very
interested in reducing manufacturing costs, but many of them rarely
take the time to understand all of the costs in this manufacturing
strategy.
Is sending a product design overseas for manufacture really the
cost-effective solution, or would your company benefit by
manufacturing it here? This webinar will try to answer this
question by showing you how DFMA can be used throughout the product
development cycle to understand costs as design and manufacturing
decisions are being made. Originally presented Thursday, October 16,
2008.
Note: During this presentation,
there is a period of three minutes where the slides do not advance,
then the program resumes. A PDF of the slides may also be downloaded from
